The SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) has arrived – and with it a question: Is SAP BTP merely an evolution or is there more to it? We take a closer look and explore SAP's new 'darling' from different angles in a small series.

As the successor to the SAP Netweaver platform, the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) is no stranger. The cloud-based Platform as a Service (PaaS) solution was developed by SAP to support companies in their digital transformation and optimisation of business processes.

With the significance of the cloud, the importance of SAP BTP has also risen. Today, the platform is THE technical foundation of the entire SAP Cloud ecosystem. Moreover, regarding many SAP solutions where mainstream support ends in 2027, as well as the successor solutions from SAP that will only be offered based on cloud services and new commercial models from SAP, customers should address this topic sooner rather than later.

We at SRB have certainly done that. In a small blog post series, we want to delve into SAP BTP and examine it from different perspectives. In Part 1, we addressed the fundamental questions that many ask when looking at SAP BTP.

Why was SAP BTP introduced?

SAP BTP arose from the need to offer a comprehensive platform that goes beyond the traditional functions of SAP NetWeaver and SAP ERP. It is not just a rehash, but a strategic response from SAP to the demands of the modern business world, including new commercial service models in the cloud.

How does SAP BTP differ from its predecessor in terms of integration?

SAP BTP offers advanced data management capabilities and enables seamless integration of data and applications. It goes beyond the traditional integration possibilities of SAP NetWeaver and creates a platform that effectively unites various systems and data sources.

How does SAP BTP promote agility and innovation?

SAP BTP provides a modern application development environment that supports various programming languages and frameworks. This flexibility allows companies to be more agile and drive innovations more quickly.

What role do intelligent technologies play in SAP BTP?

SAP BTP integrates artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) directly into business processes. This enables companies to benefit from intelligent analytics and automated decision-making processes.

How does SAP BTP contribute to a holistic view of enterprise IT?

SAP BTP is the foundation within the framework of Intelligent ERP to implement a 360-degree view of data management, application development, integration, and intelligent technologies. This holistic perspective allows companies to understand and optimise their IT landscape as an integrated whole.

More than just a platform

In summary, SAP BTP is undoubtedly more than just a new technical platform after Netweaver. It represents an evolutionary step that addresses the demands of modern businesses for integration, agility, innovation, and intelligent technologies. By enabling a comprehensive view of enterprise IT, SAP BTP significantly contributes to optimally positioning companies for the challenges of the digital era. However, the introduction of SAP BTP necessarily requires a series of further commercial and organisational changes and should therefore not be viewed merely as a technological innovation, but as a strategic step towards a forward-looking, integrated platform.

Those coming from the previous SAP on-premise world will need to consider several new or changed aspects and levels with SAP BTP. What these are will be revealed in another blog post. Stay tuned!
